The Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have launched a $10 million Hydrogen Fuel Grant Program designed to make hydrogen-powered drayage trucks significantly more affordable to operate.
The program reimburses participating fleets for a portion of their hydrogen fuel purchases, reducing the effective cost of hydrogen to just $7.50 per kilogram for eligible fuel cell trucks. Depending on the market price of hydrogen, the grant can provide up to $22.50 per kilogram in reimbursement. The grant is available to eligible drayage fleets operating at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
Learn More & ApplyFor a typical Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck:
| Effective Hydrogen Price | $7.50/kg |
| Typical Tank Capacity | 70 kg |
| Approximate Cost to Fill | $525 |
| Estimated Driving Range | Up to 480+ miles |
| Estimated Fuel Cost | Approximately $1.09 per mile |
The grant is available to eligible drayage fleets operating at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis until the $10 million program has been exhausted.
For many fleets, fuel cost has been one of the biggest barriers to adopting hydrogen fuel cell trucks.
With this grant, hydrogen becomes competitive with — and in many cases less expensive than — operating newer diesel trucks, while providing the benefits of zero tailpipe emissions, fast refueling, and long driving range. The program helps fleets reduce operating costs while accelerating the transition to cleaner transportation at California’s busiest ports.
