Avoid The Fines

The laws and regulations regarding commercial vehicles (CMV) on the road are constantly changing and all trucks need to be up to date with their inspections/certifications to avoid fines. The Department of Transportation (DOT) mandates that all commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs need to be inspected every 90 days either by a state police officer or a qualified DOT inspector. These inspections check all parts and accessories of the vehicles to guarantee that all CMV’s are road safe and in good condition.

The actual inspection has six different levels of inspection, starting with level I and all the way through level VI. For the most part, the state police and inspectors stick to the North American standard inspection which is level 1. The inspection involves both the driver and their vehicle.

Driver inspection:

  • Driver’s license
  • Medical certificate and waiver
  • Daily logs
  • Hours of service documentation
  • Driver and vehicle inspection reports (DVIR’s)
  • Hazmat endorsements, if needed

Vehicle Inspection:

  • Seat belt function
  • Exhaust system
  • Fuel system
  • Brakes
  • Emergency exits
  • Suspension
  • Tires, hubcaps
  • All lights and signals
